How to Pack and Store Your Stuff

Save space and worry with caravan storage

If you're like most caravan owners, you spend a lot of time in your caravan while you're on holiday. However, there are also long stretches of the year in which you likely don't get the chance to use it at all. During these periods, you have several options for storing your caravan.

Home storage

You could store your caravan at home. This method has the advantage of convenience: your caravan will be close at hand whenever you need it, and you'll be able to keep an eye on it in case of accidental damage. However, not everyone has the space to store a caravan in their driveway or garage. There are other challenges, too: for instance, if your caravan is normally parked outside your home, its absence can be a sign to would-be thieves that you're away on holiday. Storing your caravan on your property may even be violating property covenants that govern how your home matches with its surroundings.

Open-air caravan storage

Some sites offer open-air caravan storage. These are typically the most affordable storage options. Your caravan is also less likely to be damaged by other vehicles or falling branches at these locations than it would be if it were parked in your driveway; otherwise, however, it's exactly as exposed to the elements. And since you won't be able to inspect it every day, it may be some time before you discover if something goes wrong.

Storage centres

If you want more protection for your caravan, consider going to a storage centre. These sites often offer not only domestic and caravan storage but other vehicle services as well, such as boat storage. A storage unit will keep your caravan out of the elements, eliminating damage from sun and rain. They'll also reduce the risk of your caravan being stolen or vandalised, as your caravan will be protected by the centre's security systems. Keeping your caravan in a storage centre may even help you save on your insurance. You won't be able to get to your caravan as quickly as you would if it were in your drive, but for most uses of caravans, this shouldn't be an obstacle.

Choosing which method you'll use to store your caravan means assessing what, exactly, you need from your storage space. If you're looking for easy access and low cost -- and you have the space available -- then home storage is definitely an option. If you don't have the room, or security is your main concern, then professional caravan storage is an excellent choice.
