How to Pack and Store Your Stuff

Two Mistakes That Could Complicate Your House Move

There are certain mistakes which could complicate your house move and thus make this experience far more stressful than you intended it to be. Here are two such mistakes.

Improvising when you run out of packing supplies

It is very common for people to underestimate the quantity of packing supplies they need to pack up all of their belongings.

If you make this mistake and you don't have a lot of time left before you need to move, you might be tempted to improvise and create makeshift packing supplies out of some random items you have lying around your current home.

For example, if you didn't buy enough removal blankets to protect your fragile furniture, you might be tempted to just throw a few old sleeping bags over these items instead.

Likewise, if you have run out of packing tape, you may be considering sealing up your cardboard boxes with twine instead.

However, if you want to prevent anything from going wrong during your house move, it is not advisable to try to improvise in this manner.

The reason for this is as follows; these makeshift packing supplies will inevitably do a subpar job of keeping your possessions intact whilst they are in transit in the moving van.

For example, a sleeping bag will not provide the same level of shock absorption as a removal blanket. As such, any furniture you wrap in sleeping bags may end up breaking whilst it is inside the moving van.

Similarly, a cardboard box secured with twine instead of packing tape will probably fall open in the back of the moving van, resulting in all of its contents spilling out and potentially being damaged.

As such, if you are running low on packing supplies, it is best to go out and purchase more, rather than trying to improvise.

Waiting until a few days before you need to move to secure the services of a removalist

Another mistake frequently made by people when they move house is waiting until just a few days before they need to move to find removalists.

This blunder could turn an otherwise straightforward house move into a nightmare. The reason for this is that many removalists are booked up several weeks (or in some cases, even months) in advance.

As such, if you wait until the last minute to begin searching for a removalist, it is unlikely that you will be able to find one that is available.

In this situation, you would have to handle the entire house move, from start to finish, by yourself. This may involve hiring a moving van at short notice, lifting all of your heavy appliances and furniture (without any lifting equipment), and making several trips from your current property to the one you are moving into. This could make your moving experience extremely hectic and stressful. Contact removalists early to ensure you can schedule your move.
